Earlier in the day. Yudhvir struck twice in the second over, removing Devon Conway and Urvil Patel to jolt the CSK top order.

Though Ayush Mhatre counterpunched with a brisk 43 off 20 balls, Deshpande removed him on the cusp of the powerplay to wrest back control. Hasaranga then dismissed R Ashwin and Yudhvir returned to remove Ravindra Jadeja, reducing CSK to 78/5.

Shivam Dube then steadied the innings with a 59-run partnership with Dewald Brevis, followed by a 43-run stand with MS Dhoni to keep the late middle-order together.

However, the Royals closed the innings in style. Madhwal and Deshpande were exceptional at the death, conceding just 17 runs in the final three overs.

Chasing 188 to win, Rajasthan Royals got off to a flying start thanks to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s brisk 36 off 19 balls. Though he fell in the fourth over, the duo of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and captain Sanju Samson kept the momentum going with a fluent 98-run stand off just 59 deliveries.

At the halfway mark, the Royals were well-placed at 95/1, needing 93 more from the final 10 overs.

Sooryavanshi brought up his maiden IPL fifty with a towering six in the 12th over, eventually finishing with an impressive 57 off 33 balls. His innings was laced with four sixes and as many fours.

Samson, steady at the other end, scored 41 off 31 deliveries and crossed the 4000-run milestone in the IPL for the Rajasthan Royals during his innings.

Both batters, however, fell in quick succession in the 14th over, giving Chennai Super Kings a glimmer of hope.

CSK briefly clawed back further with the wicket of Riyan Parag in the 16th over but Dhruv Jurel’s fiery 12-ball 31 and Shimron Hetmyer’s finishing touches sealed the win for the Royals with nearly three overs to spare.
