Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his purple patch with the bat for India in Test cricket with a composed century on the opening day of the first match against England at Headingley on Friday.

The 23-year-old opener, who represents Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, reached his fifth Test hundred - and third against England - in 144 balls, hitting 16 fours and one six en route.

Having opened the batting with KL Rahul after England asked India to bat first, Yashasvi Jaiswal was aggressive in the early stages of his innings but transitioned into a measured approach in response to the playing conditions.

Jaiswal and Rahul put up 91 for the opening wicket but England struck back by dismissing KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan in quick succession just before lunch.

After resumption, Yashasvi Jaiswal showcased great maturity to pace his innings with captain Shubman Gill in tow and completed a fantastic century. His second fifty took just 48 balls.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was finally dismissed by Ben Stokes for 101. Just before reaching his century, Jaiswal seemed to be struggling with pain in both of his hands and had to be treated on the field.

Jaiswal had scored two double centuries during the home series against England last year and finished as the leading run-scorer.

His latest knock establishes him as a key part of India’s Test batting unit, especially in the post-Kohli, post-Rohit era.

With this innings, Jaiswal became the fifth Indian to score a century in his first Test innings in England. He joins an elite list that includes Murali Vijay, Vijay Manjrekar, Sourav Ganguly and Sandeep Patil.

Jaiswal has also created the unique feat of having scored Test centuries in his debut Tests in three different countries - the West Indies, Australia and now England.

The southpaw is coming off a fantastic 2024 season, which saw him score 1478 runs - the most by any Indian that year and the most Test runs by an Indian opener ever.

He also hit 36 sixes in Tests in 2024, which is a new world record for a calendar year.

Jaiswal ended the year as the second-highest scorer in Tests behind a member of the original Fab Four in England’s Joe Root, who scored 1556 runs from 17 matches.

The left-handed opener was also part of the Indian squad which won the T20 World Cup 2024 and was RR’s highest scorer in IPL 2025.
