Wanindu Hasaranga weaved his web around Bangladesh’s batters to help the Sri Lanka cricket team register a 77-run win in the first ODI of a three-match series against Bangladesh in Colombo on Wednesday.
In the process, Hasaranga also became the second-fastest Sri Lankan bowler to pick up 100 wickets in ODI cricket after the hosts had posted 244 at the end of the first innings.
Ajantha Mendis is the quickest Lankan to the 100 ODI wicket milestone, having reached the mark in 63 matches. Hasaranga took just one more match and four less than the next fastest, the legendary Lasith Malinga.

Chasing 245 to win, Bangladesh were in cruise control at 100/2 after 17 overs.
The Lankans needed a breakthrough and Hasaranga, who finished last year as the highest wicket-taker in ODIs globally with 26 scalps, delivered with his second ball.
He trapped Litton Das, one of the most experienced campaigners in the Bangladesh squad, LBW for a duck to register his 100th victim with the ball in the format.
Three balls later, Hasaranga dismissed Tanzid Hasan, Bangladesh’s highest scorer in the match with 62, to rock the visitors’ chase.
The dual blow triggered a Bangladesh collapse and Hasaranga would go on to pick two more crucial wickets in the form of opposition skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Jaker Ali, who was the last wicket to fall after making 51.
Hasaranga, who represents Rajasthan Royals in the IPL and picked up 11 wickets in the 2025 season, bowled two maidens in his 7.5 overs and was virtually unplayable.
Earlier this year, Hasaranga had also become the fastest player to take 300 T20 wickets in the world.
Hasaranga’s Sri Lanka and Rajasthan Royals team-mate Maheesh Theekshana also dismissed Tanvir Islam in the match to finish with figures of 1/32 in his nine overs.
