Yashasvi Jaiswal struck a scintillating century for the Indian cricket team in the first innings of the second match of the India vs West Indies Test 2025 series at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Friday.

The 23-year-old opener scored 175 off 258 balls, smashing 22 fours during his knock. He ended Day 1 on 173 runs, helping put India in a commanding position of 318/2 at stumps and then added two more on the second day before being run out.

This was Yashasvi Jaiswal’s seventh Test century, placing him second only to Sachin Tendulkar (11) for the most hundreds in the format by an Indian player aged 23 or younger.

Sir Donald Bradman of Australia holds the record for most Test hundreds by the age of 23 with 12. West Indies’ Sir Garfield Sobers is third with nine tons.

“Jaiswal is just getting better and better day by day,” former Indian spin legend Anil Kumble told JioHotstar. “We’ve spoken about his hunger and his attitude toward building big innings, not just for himself but for the team. Even in the previous game, he got off to a good start but was dismissed early, so he’s certainly made up for that here.”

“Throughout his short career, he has shown that he doesn’t waste opportunities like these,” Kumble observed.

After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Yashasvi started watchfully and put on a 58-run stand with KL Rahul for the first wicket.

The southpaw then shifted gears seamlessly after lunch, smashing three fours in the first over of the second session to bring up his fifty off 82 balls.

After moving into the 90s with a couple more fours, Yashasvi brought up his hundred off 145 balls and helped move India into a commanding position.

Not satisfied after completing yet another ton, the 23-year-old kicked on as he went on to bring up his 150 in the 82nd over of the match.

This was Yashasvi Jaiswal’s fifth 150-plus score in red-ball cricket and second Test ton against the West Indies, having also hit a hundred against them while making his red-ball debut in July 2023.

Yashasvi’s 150 also equalled the record of Brian Lara, who was previously the only player to have five scores of 150 in his first seven centuries.

Interestingly, all seven of Yashasvi’s hundreds have come at different venues. His two against West Indies have come at Windsor Park and the Arun Jaitley Stadium, while his sole ton against Australia was at the Perth Stadium.

Yashasvi’s four Test hundreds against England came at the Kennington Oval, Headingley, Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium and the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy Cricket Stadium.

Since his Test debut against the West Indies in 2023, Yashasvi has quickly become the backbone of India’s batting. He has amassed 2420 runs in 26 Tests at an average of 52.60, with seven centuries and 12 fifties.

Yashasvi’s 1478 Test runs in 2024 alone also set a new record for the most by an Indian opener in a calendar year and earned him a spot in the ICC Men's Test Team of the Year.

Part of the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, Yashasvi Jaiswal has scored over 2100 runs for the franchise so far.
