Two years ago, Riyan Parag had made a bold claim on social media.

“My inner conscience says I’m hitting 4 sixes in an over at some point this IPL,” the Rajasthan Royals batter wrote on X (formerly Twitter)

Up against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens on Sunday, the Rajasthan Royals skipper did two better - hitting six sixes in a row with five of those coming in one over off Moeen Ali.

Parag became the first player in Indian Premier League history to hit six sixes off successive legal deliveries, surpassing the likes of Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard and Rinku Singh - all of whom had previously struck five in a row.

Fittingly, Parag’s blitz came during the second innings, with the Royals in a tough spot.

Chasing 207, RR were reeling at 102/5 in 12 overs when Shimron Hetmyer took a single off the first ball of Moeen Ali’s over, bringing Parag on strike. Then came the fireworks with four monster hits in a row.

Moeen tried to escape with a wide but Parag still got hold of the next one and sent it over long-off. The 32-run over was also the joint-fourth most expensive over in IPL history.

In the next over, Hetmyer again handed over the strike first ball and Parag reverse-swept Varun Chakravarthy over backward point.

Parag eventually fell in the 18th over for a blistering 95 off 45 balls - an innings that included six fours and eight sixes. He was five short of what would have been his maiden IPL hundred but managed to register his highest score in the competition.

“I was planning to stay till the last, but unfortunately, I got out in the 18th over. It was a miscalculation from my side,” Parag said after the match. The Royals lost the match by one run.

The Royals will play the Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk next Monday before returning home to host Punjab Kings in Jaipur in their final match of the IPL 2025 season on May 16.
