Lhuan-dre Pretorius scored a sparkling half-century on his ODI debut for the South Africa cricket team against Pakistan in Faisalabad on Tuesday.

Opening the innings, the 19-year-old looked right at home, timing the ball sweetly and driving with authority from the outset en route to a fluent 57 off 60.

His first boundary - a crisp straight drive off the first ball of the second over - set the tone for his innings.

In the company of the experienced Quinton de Kock, Pretorius impressed with his technique against the new ball.

After facing a majority of the deliveries in the first seven overs, Pretorius, a part of the Rajasthan Royals squad in the Indian Premier League, shifted gears once the spinners came on.

His innings also included a six over midwicket before reaching the maiden ODI fifty off 48 balls.

His knock, studded with seven fours and a six, provided South Africa with the ideal platform before a sharp catch at point ended his stay. He departed with the scoreboard reading 98/1 in the 16th over.

Earlier this year, Lhuan-dre Pretorius announced himself on the international stage by becoming the youngest South African to score a Test century on debut in June.

At just 19 years and 93 days, Lhuan-dre Pretorius reached his maiden hundred in 113 balls and went on to hammer 153 off 160 against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

Lhuan-dre Pretorius also became the youngest player in Test history to score 150 on debut, breaking a record previously held by Pakistan’s Javed Miandad, who was 19 years and 119 days old when he scored 163 against New Zealand in 1976.

He has also represented the Proteas in 12 T20Is and has already scored a half-century in the shortest format.

With four hundreds and five fifties already in just 12 first-class matches, Lhuan-dre Pretorius is considered one of the brightest young batting prospects in the game.
