Superstition may be deeply ingrained in modern-day cricket, with many players relying on set routines to stay in form, but Yashasvi Jaiswal prefers to swim against the tide.

In a recent interview with Kevin Pietersen, the Rajasthan Royals opener explained how constantly challenging himself - rather than sticking to rituals - has driven both his rise and self-belief.

Even when he is scoring freely, the 24-year-old makes a conscious effort to challenge himself by experimenting with new methods, adapting his approach and finding different ways to deliver at his best.

“For me, I never believe in superstitions. I always challenge myself. If I score really good runs doing that same thing, then I will challenge myself,” Yashasvi Jaiswal said during an interview on Kevin Pietersen’s YouTube channel.

“Let's see how I can do it in a different way. I will try to wear things differently. I will try to use different bags. It's all about me and my mindset and my work. Yes, there is a routine on how you prepare. There is a routine and how you sleep, how you visualise. But I never believe in anything like that,” he added.

That said, Yashasvi Jaiswal - the Royals’ fifth-highest all-time scorer with 2350 runs - admitted that the nerves still flutter as he walks out to bat.

“I think it's just excitement and opportunities I feel. But there are butterflies because I want to do well. So for that I believe a lot in my practice because for me my strength is my practice sessions,” he said.

One of only six Indians to have scored centuries across all three formats, Yashasvi Jaiswal also explained that his approach is rooted in focusing on the ball in front of him rather than the reputation of the bowler delivering it.

“If anybody is bowling a loose ball up first, I'm going to hit it and that is what my mentality is. If they are bowling very well or in good areas with a good field, then I will respect them and make sure that I can score runs, so my plan will always change,” he stressed.

Yashasvi Jaiswal has been central to the Royals’ strong start to the IPL 2026 season, with his opening partnerships alongside Vaibhav Sooryavanshi consistently laying the platform for several wins in the ongoing campaign.

He is currently the second-highest run-scorer for RR in IPL 2026 and will be in action next on Sunday when the Royals face Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Eden Gardens - the same venue where Yashasvi struck the fastest fifty in IPL off just 13 balls against KKR.
