Vaibhav Sooryavanshi unleashed carnage during his breathtaking 29-ball 97 that helped Rajasthan Royals beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 47 runs in the IPL 2026 Eliminator on Wednesday.
Sooryavanshi’s Player of the Match performance at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh saw him climb to the top of the IPL 2026 Orange Cap race, having amassed 680 runs in 15 matches for the Royals this season.
At one stage during Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s belligerent innings, it looked like the left-hander would break Chris Gayle’s fastest IPL century off 30 balls record.
However, the teenager fell agonisingly short of the record after being caught at deep third for 97 off 29 balls but not before he had left a trail of broken records in his wake.

Most runs by an uncapped player in an IPL season
Sooryavanshi broke the record for most runs by an uncapped player in an IPL season, surpassing the previous record held by fellow Rajasthan Royals batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had scored 626 runs in IPL 2023. He has now made 680 runs this season.
Most sixes in an IPL season
Sooryavanshi has now hit the most sixes in an IPL season, having cleared the ropes 65 times this season. He needed seven sixes to break Chris Gayle’s record at the start of his knock and took just 15 balls to go past the record. His 65 maximums are also the most sixes ever hit by a player in a T20 tournament or series.
First teenager ever to score 600 runs in a T20 tournament
The 15-year-old became the first-ever player to score 600 runs in any T20 tournament. He needed 17 runs to get there and reached the landmark on the second ball of the third over.
Joint fastest IPL playoff fifty record
The prodigious teenager raced to a 16-ball half-century, matching Suresh Raina’s mark for the fastest fifty in IPL playoff history. Raina had reached his half-century in 16 balls for Chennai Super Kings against Punjab Kings in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2014.
Most sixes in an IPL playoff innings
The hard-hitting left-hander’s 97 was laced with 12 maximums, which is the new record for the most sixes hit by a player in an IPL playoff innings. Shubman Gill was the previous record holder, having struck 10 sixes for Gujarat Titans against Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 during IPL 2023.
First player with 10+ sixes in an innings three times in one IPL season
Sooryavanshi’s 12 maximums also saw him become the first player with 10+ sixes in an innings three times in one IPL season. He had also hit 12 sixes against SRH in Jaipur and 10 maximums against Lucknow Super Giants at the same venue earlier this season.
Equalled Chris Gayle’s record of four IPL innings with 10+ sixes
The swashbuckling southpaw is now level with Chris Gayle’s record of four IPL innings with 10+ sixes. The first instance when Sooryavanshi smashed more than 10 sixes in a knock came during his maiden IPL ton against GT last when he hit 11 maximums.
Most powerplay runs in a single IPL season
Known for making the most of the early fielding restrictions, Sooryavanshi has now scored 490 runs during the first six overs to claim the record for most powerplay runs in a single IPL season. David Warner held the record previously, having scored 467 runs for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2016.
Most sixes in IPL powerplay overs
Sooryavanshi’s eight sixes in the first six against SRH on Wednesday are the most sixes hit by a player in IPL powerplay overs. Several players, including Abhishek Sharma, Sanath Jayasuriya and Jonny Bairstow, had previously hit seven sixes in the powerplay.
