Known for maximising the fielding restrictions at the top of the order, Rajasthan Royals opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became the first batter to score 500 powerplay runs in an IPL season.

The teenage sensation achieved the feat during the IPL 2026 Qualifier 2 clash against Gujarat Titans on Friday, reaching the milestone with the first 10 runs of his innings.

Remarkably, 452 of Sooryavanshi’s powerplay runs when he reached 500 came in boundaries, which included 47 fours and 44 sixes.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, in fact, is the first batter to score 500 powerplay runs in one season of any T20 tournament across the globe.

Sooryavanshi had already broken the previous record for most powerplay runs in an IPL season during his blistering 97 off 29 balls against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Eliminator. The earlier record belonged to David Warner, who had scored 467 powerplay runs for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2016.

The Royals batter also continues to lead the IPL 2026 Orange Cap standings, having amassed more than 700 runs in 16 matches this season.

Against SRH in the Eliminator, Sooryavanshi had also broken the record for most runs by an uncapped player in a single IPL season.

He surpassed fellow Rajasthan Royals batter Yashasvi Jaiswal’s tally of 625 runs from IPL 2023. The 15-year-old also became the first teenager to score 600 runs in a T20 tournament.

Sooryavanshi also etched his name in the record books by smashing eight sixes in the powerplay against SRH - the most by a batter in the first six overs of an IPL innings.

The previous best was seven, jointly held by several players including Abhishek Sharma, Sanath Jayasuriya and Jonny Bairstow.
