Joe McBride, originally from Dublin, Ireland, works in the Department of Tax and Customs at NEOM. His love for cricket began 14 years ago when his kids started playing. That led him to coaching, then heading his local club’s youth academy, and eventually umpiring youth and senior matches.
After moving to NEOM, Joe sought something meaningful outside work. He joined the NEOM x Rajasthan Royals Cricket Leadership Programme and was thrilled to be selected as an umpire for the NEOM x RR Community Cricket Tournament. It gave him purpose and a sense of home. Since getting involved, Joe has umpired over 50
games in the tournament.
One of Joe’s proudest moments was officiating the Grand Final in front of over 2200 fans. He was later recognized for his contribution and received an award from cricket legends Sangakkara and Dravid, calling it “a brilliant feeling.”
The tournament played a vital role in his well-being. “It helped me stay active and meet great people,” Joe shares, especially highlighting the impact of supporting women’s training sessions.
Joe believes cricket in NEOM has a bright future. “It’s growing every year. Including women and children will make it even more special.” From Dublin to NEOM, cricket continues to shape Joe’s journey.
