A total of seven matches will be played over the course of the tri-series. All three teams will face each other twice, with the top two sides that win the most matches squaring off once more in the final.

Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Kwena Maphaka, both of whom represent the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, head into the series after being a part of the South Africa cricket team that beat Zimbabwe 2-0 in a two-match Test series.

Pretorius, in particular, was in great nick and created history by becoming the youngest South African to score a Test century on debut.

He made 153 off 160 deliveries and also became the youngest player in Test history to score 150 in his maiden outing. The 19-year-old then followed up his history-making feat in the first Test with another solid knock of 78 from 87 balls in the second.

Pretorius, who is yet to make his international debut for South Africa in the 20-over format, has managed 1021 runs in 38 games at a strike rate of 146.48.

Kwena Maphaka, on the other hand, has played five T20s and picked three scalps for the Proteas.

Another Rajasthan Royals pacer, Nandre Burger, meanwhile, will be returning to international cricket after almost a year.

He was most recently seen in action in the US T20 league, where he finished with eight wickets for Texas and registered career-best T20 figures of 3/10 in a win over Seattle.

Burger, who has represented the Proteas in all three formats, has played two T20Is. He was drafted in as a late replacement for the injured Sandeep Sharma in the RR squad during IPL 2025.

In terms of the head-to-head records, South Africa have beaten Zimbabwe five times in T20I with the only other encounter between the teams ending in a no result.

The Proteas also boast a superior head-to-head record over New Zealand, having gotten the better of the Kiwis 11 times and losing on four occasions.
