The 29-year-old Hetmyer, who last played an ODI against England in June 2025, will join the West Indies squad ahead of the third and final ODI on Monday.
While announcing the squad, Cricket West Indies (CWI) stated that Hetmyer’s inclusion is part of their long-term plans and ‘strategic build-up’ leading into next year’s ODI World Cup in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
The series also marks the start of a crucial stretch for the two-time ODI world champions in their bid to secure automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup.
The Caribbean side is currently 10th in the rankings. Only the top eight teams, along with hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, are guaranteed entry via the rankings pathway.
Sri Lanka are sixth in the ICC men’s ODI team rankings.
Earlier this year, Hetmyer impressed at the T20 World Cup 2026, scoring 248 runs in seven matches at an average of 41.33 and a strike rate of 186.46.
One of the Caribbean side’s most explosive white-ball batters, Hetmyer has scored 1,543 runs in 57 ODIs since his debut in 2017, including five centuries, at an average of 31.48 and a strike rate of 105.39.
Hetmyer also featured for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026, making seven appearances. Across 94 IPL matches, he has amassed 1,560 runs at an average of 27.37 and a strike rate of 149.28.
The WI vs SL ODI head-to-head record remains evenly poised, with both teams winning 32 apiece in 67 matches. The remaining three matches ended without a result.
The two teams will also play three T20Is in Jamaica before concluding the tour with a two-match Test series in Antigua. Rajasthan Royals’ Dasun Shanaka is part of Sri Lanka’s T20 squad.
