Rajasthan Royals have played 29 matches against the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League, since 2008. In the RR vs CSK head-to-head record, the Royals have won 13 matches while the Super Kings have won 16.
The two teams first met in the inaugural edition of IPL in 2008, with the Royals winning the match by eight wickets at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur on May 5.
Bowling first, the Royals skittled out CSK for a paltry 109 as left-arm pacer Sohail Tanvir picked up 6/14 with the ball. Munaf Patel also chipped in with two wickets.
Tanvir’s was the best bowling effort in the IPL till 2019 before it was surpassed by Alzarri Joseph. But, it continues to be the best bowling figure by any Royals bowler in the IPL to date.
In reply, the Royals got to the target for the loss of only two wickets with 34 balls to spare. Graeme Smith remained unbeaten, top-scoring for the Royals with 35 as Swapnil Asnodkar made 32. This is also the Royals’ biggest win against CSK in the IPL.
The Royals played three matches against CSK in the first season, beating them in all of those. The Royals trumped CSK in the final of the inaugural edition of IPL in 2008 to chart one of their most memorable wins of the tournament.
Opting to field first, the Royals kept CSK to 163/5 as Yusuf Pathan finished with 3/22 off his four overs. Shane Watson and Tanvir took a wicket each.
Pathan once again starred in the chase top-scoring with 56 off 39 balls before getting run out. But captain Shane Warne and Tanvir ensured that the Royals finished on the right side of a last-ball finish carrying the team home by three wickets.
The Royals became the first champions of the IPL, as Yusuf Pathan was declared Player of the Final.
The Royals notched up their highest total of 223/5 against CSK during their IPL 2010 encounter, but lost the match by 23 runs. Batting first, CSK put 246/5 on the board as Shane Watson finished with 2/47 for the Royals.
In response, Naman Ojha scored 94 off just 55 balls hitting eight fours and six sixes as Shane Watson joined in with an astonishing 60 off only 25 balls which included five fours and five sixes.
In their seven meetings at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, the Royals have come out on top four times, and the Super Kings have won thrice. The Royals won the last match against CSK here by 32 runs in 2023.
Shane Watson’s 101 off 61 balls at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai in 2013 remains the best individual effort by a Rajasthan Royals batter against the Chennai Super Kings. Watson hit six fours and six sixes en route to his century but unfortunately, the Royals ended up on the losing side that night as CSK won the contest by five wickets.
From 2021 to 2023, the Royals recorded their longest winning streak against CSK with four straight victories.
