Dasun Shanaka, who represents Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League, has been named in the Sri Lankan cricket team’s T20I and ODI squads for the upcoming white-ball tour of England, starting September 15.

Sri Lanka Cricket announced 16-member squads for both formats on Wednesday. Kusal Mendis will captain the visitors in the T20Is and ODIs, with Charith Asalanka serving as his deputy.

Sri Lanka will play three T20Is followed by as many ODIs during the tour. The team is scheduled to depart for England on September 5.

Shanaka’s most recent international assignment came against the West Indies in June, when he finished as Sri Lanka’s leading run-scorer in the three-match T20I series with 96 runs.

The 34-year-old all-rounder starred with a 24-ball 58 in the second T20I at Sabina Park to help Sri Lanka level the series. He brought up his half-century in just 19 deliveries, equalling his own record for the fastest T20I fifty by a Sri Lankan, and was named Player of the Match.

In the series finale, Shanaka also became only the fourth Sri Lankan batter to complete 2,000 runs in T20 Internationals, joining Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis and Kusal Perera in the milestone club.

Shanaka represented Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026 and featured in seven matches during the season.

The former Sri Lanka captain has played 134 T20Is, more than any other player from his country in the format. He has scored 2,008 runs and taken 46 wickets in T20 Internationals.

Shanaka also brings considerable ODI experience, having scored 1,299 runs in 71 matches, including two centuries and four half-centuries. His highest score of 108 not out came against India in Guwahati in 2023.

With the ball, the seam-bowling all-rounder has taken 27 ODI wickets, including career-best figures of 5/43.

Shanaka also captained Sri Lanka to the Asia Cup title in 2022.

For the England tour, Shanaka will be joined by experienced all-rounders Wanindu Hasaranga and Dunith Wellalage in both squads, while Maheesh Theekshana, Dushmantha Chameera and Eshan Malinga have also been selected for both formats.

The three-match T20I series begins in Southampton on September 15 before moving to Cardiff on September 17 and Manchester on September 19.

The ODI leg starts in Chester-le-Street on September 22, with the remaining matches scheduled in Leeds on September 24 and at The Oval on September 27.
