In a freewheeling chat with famed Sports commentator and journalist Ayaz Memon, our Royal Brand Ambassador Shane Warne talked about the early days of his cricketing career, rising to fame and becoming a spin legend. The spin wizard also discussed why he ranks winning the IPL with Rajasthan Royals as one of his biggest achievements.
The evening, hosted by Rohan Shah-Legal & Tax Expert at his rooftop terrace, was infused with lot of conversations and laughter with Warne sharing some of his life experiences with the audience that had a mix of former cricketers like Sanjay Manjrekar and Yajurvindra Singh Bilkha along with top Bankers, industrialists and many more.
Revisiting his best cricketing memories, Warne’s ball of the century to dismiss Mike Gatting in the 1993 Ashes series couldn’t be left out. That moment was the first taste of fame for Warne;being followed by 20 photographers everywhere, reading about himself in news dailies and being surrounded by fans for autographs and photographs.
Shane mentioned on how every sports enthusiast should be knowing the history of the game and be educated about their sport in particular. “I love the history of the game. I urge all youngsters to get educated about the history of the game and that’s how you would know what you need to do to evolve and be better,” said Warne.
Talking about Indian cricket, Warne exclaimed how the Indian cricket team has become a powerful side. Praising Indian cricket, the BCCI and the swashbuckling skipper Virat Kohli, Warne mentioned that India has the perfect structure in place and are producing world-class players. He believes that India is a top fielding side and has one of the best bowling attacks, going into the World Cup.
He also stated that should the players continue to give their all and represent India in Test cricket they would become a world force to reckon with. Speaking about the IPL’s impact on cricket, Shane Warne went on to say that in the initial days of the IPL, most franchises would look to bounce the Indian batsmen out. But over time they realised that better strategies in fielding as well as bowling would lead them to win matches across the world.
Shane also talked about the importance of being the best in whatever we do. On asking how bowling to legends like Brian Lara and Sachin Tendulkar was, he mentioned, “I always believed that the best of world cricket like Tendulkar and Lara only deserved the highest quality of bowling, hence I worked on impactful deliveries whenever I bowled to them.”
