As the on-field cricket action shifts to Australia with India’s series against the Aussies, it is the off-field cricket action that is keeping all the IPL teams busy in India. November proved to be a tough month for most franchisees, with all teams deciding which players to retain and release ahead of next year’s tournament.

The decisions taken on Retention day on November 15th had a big impact on the player salary purses and gave a clear indication as to what kind of strategies the teams would adopt going into the auction on December 18th in Jaipur. While stalwarts like Gautam Gambhir & Yuvraj Singh were released by their teams, the Australian pair of Steve Smith & David Warner were retained by their respective sides.

Salary Cap available to all teams (in INR):

Team Salary Cap Available Slots Available
Rajasthan Royals 20.95 crores 9 (6 Indian, 3 Overseas)
Delhi Daredevils 25.50 crores 10 (7 Indian, 3 Overseas)
Kings XI Punjab 36.20 crores 15 (11 Indian, 4 Overseas)
Royal Challengers Bangalore 18.15 crores 10 (8 Indian, 2 Overseas)
Mumbai Indians 11.15 crores 7 (6 Indian, 1 Overseas)
Sunrisers Hyderabad 9.70 crores 5 (3 Indian, 2 Overseas)
Chennai Super Kings 8.40 crores 2 (2 Indian)
Kolkata Knight Riders 15.20 crores 12 (7 Indian, 5 Overseas)

While all teams retained their core, the decisions on release and retention were affected by possible early World Cup departures, salary cap purses and auction strategies. The remaining salary purse is expected to be used by all the teams at the upcoming IPL auction to build up their squads, fill their gaps and create some depth for this season and the future. The Australian players are already confirmed to miss the last few weeks of the IPL for a pre-World Cup camp and a couple of other countries may take similar stances.

December is going to be an exciting month as the IPL Auction heads to the home of the Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on the 18th with lots of decisions and strategies to be worked out before the hammer goes down!
