Ajinkya Rahane looks to improve power-hitting skills

30th September 2015

Following MS Dhoni's criticism of his suitability to the limited-overs format, Ajinkya Rahane is working on improving his big-hitting skills.

"If I am batting in the middle-order, I have to improve my game. I know I will face challenging circumstances where I have to increase the team's runrate and for that I am improving my power-hitting skills," Rahane said on Tuesday .

ODI skipper Dhoni had said Rahane found it difficult to get going on the slow, low wickets of the subcontinent, and preferred Amabati Rayudu in the Mumbai batsman's place. The move was perceived as harsh and Rahane subsequently went on to lead a second-string side in the 50-over and T20 matches in Zimbabwe.

"I spoke with Dhoni, and he gave me his feedback. I took it in a positive way. My only motto is to gain cricketing knowledge and move forward," Rahane said, presenting a straight bat.

Rahane's ODI career has not really taken off in the manner his Test career has. In Tests, he has been India's most consistent batsman over the last two years, where the team has mostly been on the road. Rahane has played 17 out of his 18 Tests on foreign soil and averages 43.64, with four centuries to his name. In contrast, in ODIs the 27-year-old averages a modest 31 from 58 games, though there have been flashes of brilliance like the belligerent 60-ball 79 he scored against South Africa in the World Cup.

Rahane agreed he needed to be more consistent in the limited-overs format. "I am looking for consistency in One-day cricket. In Test matches, I have learnt to be in my zone. Now, the challenge for me is to adapt to the challenges of the 50-over format. I believe it's all about mental adjustment."

India will take on South Africa in Dharamshala on Oct 2 in the first of three T20 which kickstarts the series.
